Horary Astrology #4

The querent’s question was simple: he wished to know whether he should, or even could, re-establish contact with a friend with whom he had abruptly severed relations several months earlier. At the moment the chart was cast, Pisces rose on the Ascendant, making Jupiter the significator of the querent. Pisces, a Water sign and feminine in nature, points to a primary motivation related to emotional needs.

Jupiter was found exalted in Cancer, another Water sign and likewise feminine, a position of great essential dignity; however, its retrograde motion revealed a state of introspection, doubt, and reconsideration. Its placement in the 5th house speaks of withdrawal and inner reflection, oriented towards personal expression and emotional preoccupation rather than social exchange or reconciliation.

Since the question concerns friendship, the analysis naturally turns to the 11th house, where Capricorn lies, ruled by Saturn, significator of the friend. Interestingly, Saturn is located in Pisces, that is, in the querent’s 1st house. This describes, almost literally, the friend sitting “on the querent’s lap,” symbolically present and weighing upon his thoughts. But there is no aspect between Jupiter and Saturn, which, in horary, clearly indicates an absence of contact, connection, or movement toward reunion.

In turn, Jupiter stands isolated. He separates by opposition from planets in the 11th house, a highly significant detail, given that the 11th is traditionally the “joy” of Jupiter. His current position in the 5th (the opposite house) is an estrangement from the social sphere to which that friend belongs. The querent appears to have withdrawn from this network of relationships, choosing instead a more solitary and self-reflective space. Meanwhile, Saturn applies by sextile to the planets located in the 11th, implying that the friend remains connected to the same social circle, continuing those relationships while the querent retreats.

The Moon, the universal co-significator of events and change, stands at 16° Sagittarius, still within the 9th house but approaching the Midheaven, which begins at 19°, the point of transition into the 10th house, the realm of visible action and concrete manifestation. She applies by square to Saturn at 26° Pisces, significator of the friend, with an angular separation of 10°. The sum of their classical moieties (9° for Saturn and 6° for the Moon) gives 15°, placing the aspect well within orb and fully valid, since perfection occurs before the Moon leaves her sign. The contact forms and perfects within the same sign, which, in horary terms, is a sufficient condition for the event to manifest.

The lunar motion reveals the unfolding of the story: she moves from the 9th house, domain of belief, principle, and moral motivation, towards the 10th, house of visibility and action. But the application takes the form of a square and there is no mutual reception between the significators. Cold and slow in Pisces, Saturn remains enclosed within his own silence, while the Moon seeks to resolve through feeling and impulse what Saturn processes through restraint and distance.

The square reveals that reunion is not impossible, but requires effort and bears weight. There is movement, but no harmony. As the Moon crosses the Midheaven, she becomes visible: the act of approach is made. Perhaps there is a message, an attempt at understanding, a small but tangible gesture. The outcome is tinged with melancholy. The friend remains present, but unreachable. The aspect perfects, yes, but within the sign of emotional struggle and disillusionment.

The chart depict a process of sincere but difficult approach. The 9th house speaks of the ideal, the 10th of action, and the square to Saturn of confrontation with reality. Reconciliation may occur on a formal or superficial level, but the original bond remains wounded. In sum, the chart portrays a bond that still occupies the querent’s mind but resists renewal. The friend persists as a melancholic presence, but the path of reunion seems troubled.
