A querent asked whether anything in her natal chart could account for the fact that her current year has been marked by repeated financial losses, like sudden traffic fines, sometimes arising from unexpected excessive enforcement by the authorities. Or devices that break apart one after the other.
One of the most effective techniques in traditional predictive astrology is annual profections. After examining the chart, she is in a 3rd house profected year, in Aries, ruled by Mars, which is in detriment in Libra, placed in the 8th house by Alcabitius and the 9th by Whole Signs. This is already indicative.

The 8th house is loss, primarily through its opposition to the 2nd, which signifies the native’s material sustenance. If the 2nd shows what is taken in, the 8th shows what is expelled, the purging of that same substance. This is why, in medical astrology, the 2nd is the mouth and the 8th the excretory system. It is also a house in aversion to the Ascendant and, being the succedent of the 7th, signifies the possessions of the open enemies of the native. All this makes it a difficult house. To have a malefic there, in poor zodiacal condition, such as Mars in detriment, makes that planet the primary agent in producing material loss.
Even when well placed, Mars separates and destroys. When poor zodiacal state like in this Chart, it does so more erratically, stripping the native of what has been accumulated in the 2nd. In Libra, it becomes overly Venusian, against his natural esse, hesitant, lacking decisiveness and force. This Mars wounds through inaction, distraction, or failure to act at the right moment. Being also close to the South Node in the chart, a malefic point associated with Saturn and Mars, its destructive capacity is intensified. As ruler of the year by profection, it becomes the Time Lord of the life of the native, activating sudden events, which are martial in nature, manifesting as sudden material losses.
Since the 3rd house is activated, these losses are tied to short journeys, neighbours, siblings, and communications. This aligns well with the occurrence of traffic fines during routine travel, or unexpected messages demanding payment of expenses. Jupiter, retrograde in the 3rd in Aries, although in the triplicity of fire, is cadent and weak. As ruler of the 2nd house Pisces, it can offer some mitigation, particularly as it also connects, through quadrant cusps, to the 10th and 11th in Sagittarius, suggesting that some of these losses may be offset by income related to career or supportive networks. Still, the capacity of Jupiter, by being cadent and retrogade, is very limited.
In a 3rd house profected year, finances fall to the 4th house radical, which becomes the operative financial house of the year. By Whole Signs, this is Taurus, ruled by Venus, which is angular in the 10th, highly visible in the upper arc, but also in detriment in Scorpio. We have a benefic that is strong by position but weakened and malefic by sign.
This can indicate several opportunities for income through career that appear attractive or promising, but contain the risk of disappointment or reduced yield. Venus in Scorpio in the 10th presents herself as a valuable for the career, but those chances opened by her, although attractive in the beginning, can be poisonous in the long run. As Venus also rules the 9th house, these opportunities may be connected to foreign matters, long journeys, or higher pursuits, areas where the native must exercise discernment because not everything that shines is gold.
There is another relevant timing factor. The querent contacted me in this month of March. When applying monthly profections within this 3rd house year, March corresponds to the sixth month since her last birthday, activating the natal 8th house. This creates a double activation of Mars, both as ruler of the year and as the planet placed in that house, which explains why this current period has been, according to her, the most difficult so far, with several expenses coming to her unexpectedly. In a month like this, sudden health issues may also arise, as the profected 6th falls into the natal 8th, creating a bond between two adverse houses, once again under the influence of Mars in detriment.
As this Mars is placed in a cardinal sign, Libra, these events tend to multiply, since cardinal signs are the most active and initiating. Furthermore, air signs are masculine and proactive, which indicates that this Mars produces losses through actions undertaken by the native herself. Were it placed in a feminine sign, the events would tend to fall upon her more passively. However, being in a masculine sign, the losses arise largely from her own actions. For this reason, the recommendation is one of extreme vigilance during such periods, particularly in matters related to these houses, in order to minimise the margin for error as much as possible.
